A safari in Tanzania will, without a doubt, be one of the greatest things you ever decide to do. This is the country that is home to the Serengeti, a name that immediately brings images of lions and elephants and herds of zebras to mind. The enormous national park will delight all senses, particularly at sunrise and sunset, when the vibrant colors of the sky hit the expansive horizon and herds of animals can be seen looking for the day’s food. You will find all of the big five animals, plus so many more.

If the Serengeti was too quiet for you or you didn’t find enough animals to satisfy your appetite, the nearby Ngorongoro Crater is an absolute cannot miss. This natural crater that has beautiful forest growing everywhere and is densely populated by animals. You cannot leave the crater without seeing your fill of African animal species. This is also an excellent place to catch one of the few remaining rhinos.

Not far from these amazing parks, Tanzania stuns with the highest peak in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro. A hike to the top is not for the faint of heart or for the ill-prepared. This breathtaking mountain, however, will offer some of the most spectacular views in the continent and making it to the top is an accomplishment you will remember for the rest of your life. Make sure to hire a local trekker that is well-versed in each nook and cranny on the mountain and is prepared with a team to assist if there is any medical or other emergency. With these experienced individuals, your trip to Kilimanjaro is sure to be incredible.

These beautiful scenes are only the tip of the country, though, literally. The rest of Tanzania offers a number of additional national parks that offer a wide range of options for hiking, animal siting and incredible scenery. Another option is the UNESCO world heritage site, Kilwa Kisiwana, which is rich in history of various cultures, religions and economies. In complete contrast, the sprawling city of Dar es Salam provides a totally different look at the country, with its busy streets that are lined by beautiful historic buildings and rich flavored foods from all parts of the world, but particularly rich in Indian and Arabic food.

One of the best options from Dar es Salam, however, is to hop a ferry to the remarkable Zanzibar Island. From the historic center of Stone Town, to the multi-colored waters with white sandy beaches, Zanzibar will provide the perfect beach getaway. If you are into snorkeling, Zanzibar and other nearby islands will offer a vast variety of colorful fish, of all sizes. Back on shore, be sure not to miss the night fish market, where you can have your choice of practically any kind of fish imaginable, all brought in fresh that night and prepared right in front of you, in the heart of Stone Town. Also worth a day trip is the Island’s spice tour, which will show you a completely different side of the island, as it takes you further inland and gives you a day out of the sun.
